human services final

For this exam you will identify key points or concepts that you have learned as a result of this course. You may only use one example of each key point or concept within your answers. For example, if you write about any aspect of Emotional Intelligence, you may not use another example (self-awareness, social awareness etc.) of this concept to answer further questions.

For each of the items (please number them, this is NOT an essay), be sure to answer each item fully and respond to all questions posed for each item. DO NOT quote from any source.
This is in your own words only! This exam is set up for you to earn the maximum points!

For the first 5 key points or concepts, identify and discuss in two full paragraphs the following things:

Questions 1 5: Please identify a total of five (5) separate ideas, concepts or facts that you have learned from the text, videos or mini-lectures. (Be sure to cite the page, video or lecture you are referring to.) These you will number 1-5.

In two full paragraphs for each concept, respond to the following questions:

What is your understanding of its meaning and relevance to the fields of Social Work or Human Services?
How you believe this new awareness or information will impact your professional practice in this field?
(This is speculation, but I am looking for you to think about and identify how you are already growing as a professional because of the work you have done in this course.)

            (ex.1) Maslow’s Theory – Introduction to Human Services, pages 45 – 47.

                          A) Maslow’s hierarchy of Basic Needs provides a guide to assisting people with
meeting basic needs with each level identifying a need that must be realized
before the individual may move on to the next level. Maslow identifies 5 areas of
need –  physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization.                                                      Maslow provides a pyramid with the most basic needs at the bottom with more
complex needs at the top. As the individual successfully meets
the needs at each level, their psychological and social development improves.

Social workers applying this theory in the field can assess the individual’s or
families needs based on where they are at. By using this tool, a social worker
can identify resources in the community that would be most useful for helping a
client reach their goals. As well, by following the guidelines of this theory
social workers can address the needs that arise at each level.

                          B) This theory will aid me in helping others by understanding what their most
urgent needs are and providing a guide to help them to the next level. By using
this tool I may be able to help individuals identify the steps they need to take to
improve the quality of their life. This may be the difference between being
                                homeless or having stable housing.

                    2) Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory -…..

                              A)
                          B)

For the next four questions, 6 – 9, please identify and discuss in one to two full paragraphs the following things:

Questions 6 9: Please identify a total of four (4) insights, perspectives or recognitions that have changed or been enhanced in you since taking this course. You will number these 6 – 9.

A. What were your beliefs/perspectives prior to learning this material?

B.  How those beliefs/perspectives have changed?

This is intended to be broad, covering anything presented in the modules or text but you must use specific examples in your answers. (Do not repeat what you have written in the first part of this exam for questions1-5).

Individual examples could include that you see things differently in the news, have changed your perspective on a social issue, recognize differences in the personal, political or behavioral perspectives of friends or co-workers or you find yourself being more mindful of your environment. You may just be beginning to see yourself as a member of this field when you approach a challenge or situation.  *Remember to be very specific and to number the 4 different answers.

(ex.)    6)  Ableism – Prior to taking this course I thought that individuals with disabilities needed help in order
to have a quality of life. I assumed people with disabilities were unable to make choices on their
own and were dependent on others. I would open doors without asking or assume someone was
unable to do tasks on their own.
Understanding now that ableism assumes people with disabilities are “less” or “broken”, I see it as a
form of discrimination. I will now be able to see each individual as being capable and having
strengths. My job will be to help them identify the abilities that they have to manage their own
                lives.

          7) Strengths-based approach – …..

Question 10: How has the material in this course met your expectations?  (Yes, it’s not a concept but it should be easy points!)
