The High Probability of Black Women Developing Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

Background
Cancer continues to be a devastating disease worldwide. Breast cancer contributes to a vast proportion of diagnoses worldwide. This type’s diagnoses were 25.4 percent of total cancer cases as of 2018 (World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), 2018). The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2020) notes that women of color have a higher probability of triple-negative breast cancer. This type of cancer is highly aggressive and likely to recur even after therapy. This study seeks to evaluate this factor.

Theoretical background
Genetic differences between persons of different ancestries are the most plausible explanations for the increased risk of black women developing triple-negative breast cancer (Linnenbringer et al., 2017). Another feasible determinant is health disparities among different racial groups (Newman & Kaljee, 2017). This study builds on these factors to form its foundation and framework. The research will explore how differences in genetic expressions and racial health disparities affect black women’s risk of developing triple-negative breast cancer.

Purpose of the study

This study aims to establish why women of color have a high likelihood of having this more aggressive breast cancer form. The study’s target population is women between 18 and 44 years that the research will recruit by random sampling.

Significance of the study
This study is significant since it provides vital information about black women’s increased danger of triple-negative breast cancer.

Specific aims
1.                  To determine whether women of color have a higher probability of getting triple-negative breast cancer.
2.                  To determine the factors that increase African American women’s likelihood of having triple-negative breast cancer.
3.                  To determine strategies that can reduce African American women’s risk of triple-negative breast cancer.

Terminology
Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: a kind of breast cancer that lacks all the latter’s receptors (Breastcancer.org, 2020).

Health Belief Model: framework for promoting health and emphasizing disease prevention.

Self-efficacy: The control of one’s environment and health behavior to control one’s health.
