Covid-19

In recent months, COVID-19 has become a widespread disease that has affected many individuals in the United States. According to Mayo Clinic (2020), some of the physiological symptoms Covid-19 patients have presented with can be attributed to the lungs, brain, and heart. While long-term effects are still unknown, due to the novelty of the disease, scientists have compared those of Covid-19 to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (Covid-19, 2020). Some of these long-term complications of ARDS are muscle weakness, fatigue, breathing problems, and depression (ARDS, 2020).

In the future, there are a vast amount of challenges the United States will face due to Covid-19. One of these problems would be a vaccine and or a drug trial. Vaccines can take up to 10-15 years to develop (Vaccine Development, 2018). While there are already Covid-19 trials going on, there is a long way to go before an official vaccine is released, along with a definitive cure. Masks are another measure the United States is taking to, protect those who are immunocompromised, along with preventing the spread of Covid-19. In the United States, certain stores, such as Wal-Mart, have required patrons to wear face masks when shopping. Last but not least, Covid-19 has placed a financial strain on many US citizens. One way the United States has helped those affected by Covid-19 is by providing a stimulus check to those individuals that qualify. While the United States still has a long way to go, there are steps heading in the right direction to slowing the spread of Covid-19.

When focusing on other countries, looking at Canada specifically, there have been many policies implemented to stop the spread of Covid-19, while helping citizens. One of the ways Canada responded to Covid-19 was to implement over 200 Million dollars of funding for PPE and mental health support for Canadians (Canada, 2020). The big topic that caught my eye was their response to mental health. While physical health is going to be a big concern with how covid-19 affects an individual, the patients mental health will suffer as well.
