South Park Recreation Center Fundraiser
Welcoming New Members and Raising Funds
INTRODUCTION
You are the new Executive Director of a brand new recreation center in South Park, a growing suburban area outside of a large metropolitan region. There is a mixture of income levels and cultures in your surrounding community and you are anxious to start building programs. Since this is a new facility there is plenty of space but few programs to draw people into the recreation center. Your first task is to plan a fundraising event in the hopes of bringing new people into your organization to grow membership.
A local non profit was asked to conduct a Community Needs Assessment two years ago to determine what services existed and what gaps in service needed to be filled to accommodate a growing population of young families in South Park. The state census data along with the Community Needs Assessment indicated an increasing number of children from infant through teenage years in the area. A new elementary school is currently being built but no other services exist for children, teenagers, or young families. The community lacks youth sports teams and educational after school programs. That said there are many corporations and business partners that exist in the area, and the international airport is just three miles away. The Economic Development Council has worked with local government to offer tax incentives for the first five years of new businesses, allowing for many new corporations to transfer to the area. The population has increased to about 80,000.
As a result of the data and assessment, the United Way encouraged the national alliance of recreation centers to consider building a new site in their area. The non-profit board of trustees hired you, a recent graduate of the M.S. in Human Services Administration Program, to be the new Executive Director of the facility.
